Take it Like it's Film

I took part in a photography challenge this week that required me to choose a single ISO.  For my non-photography friends a simple definition of ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to available light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera. I chose ISO 200 which I knew be great for outdoor photos (great for bright light), but make my indoor shots a little more challenging. We also could only take 36 photos just like if we were using a film camera.

I didn't do too bad with the ISO, but I totally failed at only taking 36 photos.  I realized how quickly my finger fires that shutter.  I was taking multiple shots without even realizing it.  About 1/3 of the way through my "roll of 36" it dawned on me what I was doing.  I went through and deleted and gave myself another chance. HOWEVER... even when I thought I was paying closer attention to what I was doing, I still was taking too many photos.  I miraculously ended up with 53 photos on my roll of film.

What a great learning experience to SLOW it DOWN.  This taught me that I have an itchy trigger finger.  I need to be more intentional about what I am shooting and take that extra second to get it right the first time.

100 Days of Summer- JUNE favorites

June went by is a swirl of color and sunshine.  These fleeting summer days always make me stop and pause.  They move so quickly in their sweet, showy display.  Gladly will I take hundreds of photos of this time just so I have ingrained in my memory their beauty.

100 days of Summer is a personal project that I am doing to document the summer of 2017.  Each day for 100 days I am taking a photo.  Already June is finished and July is in full swing.  The photos below feature some of my favorites from the month of June. March Perspectives

4 PERSPECTIVES. 52 WORDS.

Can I just gush for a moment? 

This project is amazing.  It is pushing me to think, to contemplate, to be inspired, and to create.  It is helping me to go beyond my perceived boundaries, to try new things and create art that I might never have created without this extra push. Not only that, but I get to work with some amazing photographer and friends.

 Week 9:  From Below

Street Photography has always intrigued me, but drawing attention to myself... Eh, not so much.  This week wasn't a hard prompt, but I wanted to take a photo of something that pushed me out of my comfort zone.  So, while I waited for my daughter to finish up with her dance class I took a picture of the old theater in our wonderful little city.  I'm sure there were people wondering what the crazy lady squatting down on the sidewalk was doing, but thankfully there aren't very often droves of people roaming the sidewalks in our town.

So, I pushed this prompt just a bit.  This isn't shot straight up at something or with the perspective of my subject straight above me.  But I was below the street light and the signs for the theater.... looking up from my location on the sidewalk.

This weeks prompt pushed me to think and think hard.  I was going to wander through town and see what I could come up with, but my time was so limited due to my work schedule. When it rained in torrents for hours on end my decision was made for me.  I was going to have to find something around the house.

 

I set up several different items I found that had interesting typography, but didn't fall in love with the results.  The photos were okay, but didn't really capture my attention. So, on a whim I decided to make something.  I got out the watercolors and paper and set to work.  

My final result caught my eye and I am glad for the push this prompt gave me to go beyond the normal still life photo I would have taken.

52 WORDS. 4 PERSPECTIVES.

At the beginning of the year I joined a group of fantastically talented photographers.  Together, Eboni, Danielle, Jessica, and I set a goal for ourselves.  Each week for 52 weeks we would take a photo that aligned with a randomly chosen word.

The end product of this joint venture is to strengthen and broaden our photography skills, to help us see detail, light, and life more effectively, and to encourage us to shoot from the heart.

2015: 355- Week 6

He’s been working on a creative writing project for months.  Not an assignment, but a story he is writing on his on free time.  I love hearing the plunking of the old key board coming from the school room.  There is creativity taking place and I LOVE that!
