What is Documentary Photography?
Documentary photography is a
relatively new genre in photography. Without going into a long drawn out
explanation that you won't ever read, I will give you a quick rundown. Bullet
points are easy to read right?! Here we go... Documentary photography is:
- photography that tells the unique, beautiful story of your family.
- photography that isn't posed- so basically no portraits (except I do offer a portrait option in my packages)
- photography that helps the guys and children in your life relax... no endless poses and directions from the photographer
- photography that captures the moment of where your family is right now.
- lots of laughter, movement, fun, and if tears erupt it's okay, because it's true to life.
Why Documentary Photography?
The next question you may be asking yourself is why? Why
would I want documentary photography over the typical portrait session? I
believe there are several good reasons.
1.
If you look back over the photos from your
life what ones do you tend to enjoy the most. It's not the portraits,
right? You don't have a lot of memories attached to those photos.
They were just you posed in a certain way with a smile pasted on your face. The
photos that mean the most have a story attached. This is the basis of documentary
photography, to tell a story that will invoke memories.
2.
What sounds like more fun to you?
Fishing at the pond with your children or sitting for portraits. Hmmm...
worms, dirt, laughter and memories or bribing your children to sit still and
smile. Yeah.
3.
With documentary photography you will be
creating a memory and capturing the story of your family. In years to
come your children will look at those photos and be able to recall what those
days were like when they were young.
Is Documentary Photography Right For You?
It is if you want to preserve life as it is right
now. If you want to remember diaper changes, sink baths, bedtime stories,
Saturday breakfasts and mini football games in the backyard, then let me tell
your unique story. Let me capture in photos the beauty of those baby
toes, little arms wrapped around your leg, wet kisses and adoring looks. Let's
get away from posing and let the kids be kids.
